This article provides a solution for store coupons which will allow automated redemption of coupons. Although a guideline issued by the Uniform Product Code Council does not adequately address store coupons, it does provide a format to be used. It specifies the following format for use by the retailer - 5 XXXXX 99XXX C, where "5" is a system number set aside for coupons and C is a modulo 10 check character. The following implementation, which does not require approval by the Council is proposed, the store codes being identified to the scanning system by the first digit "5" and the seventh and eighth digits "9". FORMAT #1 = 5 IIIII 99MMA C whereIIIII is the manufacturer's item code MM is the manufacturer's identification number (ID) A is the coded amount field.
