Optical Test Fixture for Elliptical Cylinders

An optical fixture is described to check the optical shape of the surface of elliptical reflectors. In Fig. 1, elliptical cylinder 10 (i.e., reflector) is mounted in a fixed position by pins 11. Narrow scan mirror 12 is mounted at the first focus 13 of the elliptical reflector, and footprint aperture measurement gage 14 is mounted in the second focus of the reflector. In operation, a light beam provided by laser 15 (i.e., He-Ne) is reflected from rotating mirror 16 to create a scan line on mirror 12. The scan line reflected from the elliptical surface is imaged on footprint measurement reticle 14. Any aberrations in the elliptical surface are noted as deviations in the footprint on the measurement reticle.
