Formatting of Communications Trace Data on a Physical Link Supporting Dynamically Changing Switched Logical Links

The invention allows the continuous formatting of communications trace data on a physical link supporting dynamically changing switched logical links. A logical link is changed when it is disconnected and reconnected - not necessarily to the same control unit - during the time the communications trace data is being collected. An array, as shown in Fig. 1, of the logical channels that the user has subscribed to is first built. Each time a control unit is brought up (a call is successfully made and a logical channel is assigned to support the control unit), an entry is made for that logical channel. Each entry, as shown in Fig. 2, is a node in a linked list whose first entry is pointed to by information in the logical channel array.
