A method is described to provide for the partitioning of a real input device into several logical input devices, each operating as an independent input device, in a virtual terminal environment. The system includes a means of allowing a single real device to appear as multiple logical devices. This new method of partitioning a real device so that the virtual terminal subsystem may treat each logical device as a real device. The virtual terminal subsystem can then allow different virtual terminals to request input events from different logical partitions of the real device and to receive input from their respective logical input devices at the same time, even though only one virtual terminal is active.
