This article describes a technique for automatic and accurate placement and inspection of surface-mounted devices (SMDs). The basic system configuration upon which the method disclosed herein is utilized is shown in Fig. 1. It includes an accurate box frame robot 1 that is controlled by an IBM Series 1 computer 2 using a manufacturing language (AML) software, a machine vision system and a program to control the process. Fig. 2 is a flowchart for the control program. (Image Omitted) The vision system consists of two cameras 4 and 5, vision processor 3 and monitor 7. Camera 4 is mounted on arm 10 of robot 1, and camera 5 is located beneath the robot work area.
