Abstract

A printer has paper fed by a paper feed roller during a carrier return without any requirement for a clutch, a solenoid, or a drive motor to drive the paper feed roller. The paper is fed solely by motion of the carrier during its return. A printer 1 includes a carrier 2, which is moved to the left by driving of a belt 3. The belt 3 passes around a pulley 4 at the left side of a frame 5. When the carrier 2 moves to the left past a position A, an actuator 6, which is mounted on the carrier 2, has its slit cut end 7 (Fig. 2) enter a bore 8 (Fig. 1) of a hub 9, which is slidably mounted in the frame 5. This moves the hub 9 to the left against the force of a spring 10 so that a bevel gear 11 on the end of the hub 9 is moved into engagement with a bevel gear 12 on the drive belt pulley 4.
