Cable Shroud Retention Device

A cable shroud utilizes a ball and spring design to retain itself to a pin header, eliminating clips which may damage cable pins. The device works in the following manner. Pins 1 (Fig. 1) of an input/output (I/O) header 2 are soldered into a printed circuit board (PCB) 3. A cable shroud 4 is pressed down over pins 1 of I/O pinned header 2. A plastic spring insert 5 is held to the shroud 4 by means of an anchor pin 9 and acts as a restraint on the upward movement of ball 7. Beneath the spring 5 is a small ball 7 which is held in a tapered dovetail slot 6 by the spring 5. The ball 7 overhangs pin-insertion holes 8 of cable shroud 4. When the shroud 4 is pressed over the pins 1, the balls 7 are displaced up deflecting the spring 5 to the position seen in Fig. 2.
