Abstract

A dual coating to be used on silica-coated magnetic films (such as discs) is comprised of a first layer of either TiO2 or SnO2 and a second (outer) layer of a polymer, as shown above. The TiO2 or SnO2 layer can be applied by vapor processes (for example, using TiCl4, etc.) or from liquid solutions (for example, alkoxide of Ti in water) which is sprayed on a hot surface to evaporate the solvent. The outer layer is a polymer (such as polyethylene, stearic acid, or wax) emulsion or solution in a low molecular weight solvent. The emulsion is sprayed on a hot surface to melt the polymer, flowing it over the surface.
