A command interface is described which provides, with a single command, the ability to pass a Command Control Block that will either do automatic polling of up to 8 Synchronous Data Link Control (SDLC) secondary stations or do an automatic response to a primary station's poll. The use of this command off-loads this function from the main processor to the microprocessor on the adapter card. Microprocessor technology today allows more and more software functions to be performed directly on card. This has two effects: 1) it off-loads the main processor from having to do that function, and 2) it makes the interface between the significantly more complex. The problem arises in how to control the function with minimum data exchange between the two processors.
