A three-buffer display system for realtime animation is disclosed and comprises: first and second buffers for alternately supplying information to a raster display; a third buffer containing background information; and logic circuitry, wherein the logic circuitry permits the third frame buffer to alternately reload background information into the first and second frame buffers such that while background information is being loaded into one buffer, the other buffer is supplying information to the display. The provided three-buffer display system permits on the order of twice the number of objects to be rendered at the same animation rate as previous systems, because instead of saving and restoring the background in the first and second buffers, the background is reloaded from the third buffer into the buffers.
