Abstract

Adhesion problems between dissimilar materials are minimized by using a polymer-based adhesive method of bonding thin film metal foil, such as aluminum or stainless steel foil, to a carrier, such as a titanium frame or a stainless steel frame, using a spotwelding technique to bond the frame to the foil (Fig. 1). The process consists of locating both foil and frame together in an appropriate fixture and spotwelding selected areas to insure both strength and flatness. When a "drum-tight" flatness is desirable on the metal foil a method to create that condition can be achieved by pressing both foil and carrier together after spotwelding. A hydraulic press is used with a pressure of approximately one ton PSI.
