The UNIX* operating system has been ported to larger mainframe computer systems such as the IBM System/370 computers and other compatible computers performing equivalent functions. In such applications of UNIX, it is preferable that UNIX not be implemented directly on the System/370 hardware due to complexities and dependencies of the hardware which make a direct implementation of UNIX on the System/370 unattractive. The preferable solution to implementing such an operating system on the System/370 is to use an existing operating system on the System/370, or at least the machine-interface parts of one, as a base to provide the required system functions for the System/370 implementation.
