This article describes an underscore and/or expanded font addressing feature for a baseline character generator. The generator is to generate a raster image of a page from a memory that contains a coded and ordered representation of the page. The character generator uses a 4-bit logic pipeline and 4 bits in the page buffer memory (the memory that holds the coded and ordered representation of the page to be printed) to pick 1 of 16 underscore thickness and placement modes. If desired, two of the four bits can be used as added font addressing bits for a larger font storage.
