Abstract

This article describes a method and means for monitoring the condition of the plastic blades used to print solder paste in Surface Mount Technology (SMT). The quality of the printed solder paste is dependent on the straightness and localized wear condition of the squeegee blade. One of the primary steps in the assembly process for Surface Mount Technology is the printing of solder paste. The printing is accomplished with a mechanical printer which uses a squeegee blade to spread the solder paste across a metal stencil. For uniform printing, it is very important that the squeegee blade holder is designed so the blade can be trued and straightened. An accurate method must be provided for determining the degree of straightness.
