It is often desirable to separately measure the number of documents in a stack of documents which have been counted out by a money-issuing mechanism. An exemplary application is the measurement of the height of a stack of currency issued into an escrow area by an automatic teller machine. Measuring the height of the stack of money, both before and after the stack has been presented to a customer using the automated teller machine, permits the computer controlling the automatic teller machine to respond in an appropriate manner if the consumer, accidentally or otherwise, removes less than the total number of bills from the stack. Money-issuing unit 11 issues bank notes 13 and stacks them on a capacitor plate 15.
