Escapement Control Algorithm for High Speed Printer

A method is described which allows a carrier to reach print speed without introducing oscillations. In order to meet throughput requirements and dot placement requirements for a drop-on-demand, ink-jet printer capable of printing at speeds up to 20 inches per second, the escapement control algorithm must accelerate the carrier as rapidly as possible to print speed and at the same time prevent or damp out any unnecessary carrier oscillations. When the escapement mechanism is a dynamic system (belt drive), these oscillations can be large. The escapement algorithm disclosed herein consists of the four velocity profiles shown in Fig. 1. The four final velocities correspond to the four print velocities used. All profiles are similar. The following is a discussion of the profile for 20 inches per second.
