Abstract

Printer status information is displayed on a "pop-up window" of a Personal Computer (PC) screen to indicate when the printer goes offline. A printer which is primarily designed for typewriter use by a user activating keys of a keyboard of a PC to which the printer is attached has no status indicators to indicate the condition that causes the printer to stop when it is functioning as a printer under control of a program in the PC. The printer might stop because of being out of paper, ribbon failure, or a change in its font or wheel being necessary, for example. A program in the PC monitors the condition of the printer for these various conditions.
