In spite of the fact that the theory of higher radix division has been known for some time, no compact implementation for dividers in excess of radix 4 has been proposed. The only known approach to implement a radix 16 divider uses two stages (overlapped) of quotient selection logic for a radix 4 algorithm, and this requires a large amount of hardware. (Image Omitted) The algorithm used in this implementation is based on the known subtract-shift recursive procedure, with the assumption that both dividend and divisor are positive numbers and the divisor is greater than the dividend.
