A method is described which allows Data Management of Margin Text to cause Included Non-Text Objects (INTOs) not to be deleted when they should be preserved. Therefore, it is now possible to correctly maintain objects with references solely or partially from within headers and footers. The original design for Non-Text and Audio Objects contained a large programming cost to avoid the two following problems: INTO's or AUDO's format controls in headers and footers seem to work correctly, but certain functions cause loss of the object. The following two situations are examples of the problem. 1. Document recovery does not scan for INTO or AUDO controls in headers and footers. Therefore, objects referenced solely by an INTO or AUDO in headers and footers will appear to be unreferenced.
