A method is described to choose the menu option most likely to be the desired selection as the context of the processing environment changes in response to the selection of a sequence of tasks by the operator. With the Displaywriter and earlier versions of PC DisplayWrite, the concept of a default menu option did not exist. The system did not indicate the most commonly selected option in the current processing environment. In accordance with the new method, the concept of Defaultable Menu Options is introduced to improve the user interface. At the initial display of any menu of directive-type options, the defaulted menu option indicated by the calling application is highlighted (video- reversed) first. In many cases, the menu options are ordered so the most commonly selected option is listed first.
