Abstract

High reliability unimorph or multilaminate benders can be constructed by creating a continuous interface of the active material with the electrodes. The benders can be assembled by laminating sheets of the active material with electrodes and then cutting the benders to size or by slotting a continuous block of the active material and filling the slots with electrode material. Any number of active materials can be used including piezoelectric or electrostrictive materials. (Image Omitted) Figs. 1A and 1B show the bender with both applied and voltage off conditions. The continuous interface of the active materials now prevents microcrack propagation. Figs. 2A and 2B show a bender assembled by using multilayer ceramic technology.
