Hollow print elements are used in a band printer to draw ink from an ink source through capillary action and print dots on a medium without the need for an ink ribbon. The Figures are cross- sectional views taken through the band and anvil of a band-type dot matrix printer. An endless moving band 1 has a series of anvils 2 spaced along its length. When the anvil is in an appropriate position, a hammer strikes it on the back surface 2B to impact against the paper, or other medium.
