Quantum Nondemolition Detector Employing Type H Phase-Matched Optical Parametric Amplification

A new type of QND detector is based on optical parametric amplification in the type II phase-matching configuration. The signal and idler modes coupled by the amplifier have orthogonal polarization. It is further assumed that the phase matching occurs at degeneracy where both signal and idler have the same frequency. Type II phase matching has been demonstrated in the nonlinear crystal KTP. In practice, the device will incorporate an optical cavity, turning the optical parametric amplifier into an oscillator. The analysis of such a device is similar when the cavity is resonant for both signal and idler at degeneracy.
