A test disk is described along with a test method for utilizing the test disk in
monitoring and/or calibrating the sensitivity of AC Mod Transducer type glide and
The test disk comprises substrate with a very thin conductive sub-layer such
as aluminum which is included between the top magnetic coating layer and an
insulating bottom layer. The thin sub-layer is patterned so that the disk will have
areas with and without a conductive sub-layer.
In usage, as the glide or burnish head flies over the disk surface, it
encounters no change in flying height over the pattern, but the capacitance
measured differs from areas with a conductive sub-layer (high capacitance) and
without a conductive sub-layer (low capacitance). The output from the head
taken over an area of the disk which as a repeated pattern (such as radial
spokes, for example) is sensed and the continuous root mean square (RMS) of
the output is taken which effectively averages all the transitions for several disk
rotations. This output provides a quick and accurate measure of the electrical
sensitivity of the glide or burnish head.
