In certain printing operations, particularly those containing lesser used symbols or characters, such as in the printing of chemical or mathematical equations in a document, it becomes necessary to frequently change printwheels during the printing of the document since characters or symbols used may not be found on the mounted printwheel. When such an operation is carried out in a single pass, it can be quite cumbersome and time consuming because of the multiple printwheel changes which may be required on each of a plurality of lines. In order to remedy this problem, a multiple pass printing operation is used.
