A form 10 for optical character recognition (OCR) processing bears a form identification number (FID) 11 which is recognized by OCR processor 12 to select a document processing format instruction set 13, 14 or 15 from memory 16. The format instruction set defines the location, type of data to be found (alphabetic, numeric, type font, character pitch, etc.) and appropriate operation (recognition, facsimile image capture), to be performed on various fields 17, 18, 19, 20, etc. of the form 10. Buffer 21 of processor 12 receives multiple scan lines of image data from linear array scanner 22. FID 11 is located in buffer 21 by reference to a header format instruction set 23 which is common to all documents bearing an FID. The FID 11 thus must appear in the same position on all documents to be processed by recognition processor 12.
