In a current DATA NETWORK comprising one or several Communication Controllers (CC), the Data Terminal Equipments (DTE) connected by this network have to comply with one of several well-defined message formats. This system provides Dial Up Equipment (DUE) which, added to such a DATA NETWORK, allows the interconnecting DTEs, the message formatting of which does not have to comply with one of the formats imposed by the DATA NETWORK. A path from a DUE "A", connected to one CC is established to one DUE "B", connected to the same or another CC, which is transparent to the data patterns exchanged by the operation of the DTE "A" and DTE "B". The operation is similar to DIAL UP TELEPHONE NETWORK. A DTE directory allocates a DTE number to each DTE.
