Currently available stepper motor controllers do not interface directly to bus hosts. The control card developed provides a flexible low cost solution, high density packaging, and programmable feedback capability for closed-loop operation. The problem consists of controlling a stepping motor from a bus host. Simplicity is gained by replacing discrete components with a programmable "computer on a chip" (e.g., Intel 8748). The card contains all of the standard control features listed below as well as parallel and serial feedback which is used for closed-loop control and which is not standard for controllers. All features are programmable across the bus, thus allowing for total flexibility in control. The card acts as an intelligent peripheral, executing commands and supplying status.
