This invention relates to a method for dynamically adjusting the load balance between a host and terminals in an interactive system in the computation of user-requested data screenfuls, comprising the steps of (a) locally caching computed screenfuls and updating local logs and directories, (b) responsive to a user request, accessing the same from the local cache if previously computed or otherwise referencing the host, and (c) adjusting the caching level downward to force increased host participation or upward to force increased cache referencing. This invention is most applicable to intelligent workstations but could be applied to distributed processing systems where one system is the master and the others are slaves. The intelligent workstation is programmed so the entire application can run locally.
