Abstract

Shown in the drawing is a communication controller wherein the scanning of the communication lines is performed through scanners under control of communication scanner processors (CSP). In case of hardware or software error, a programmed reset command is used to allow a faulty scanner to be disconnected from the I/O Bus, without having to put the whole controller down by a General Power-On-Reset command. The controller comprises a central control unit (CCU) with I/O interfaces. The CCU is an interrupt-driven processor which operates under control of a stored program to exercise an overall control over the system. A cycle steal mechanism is used for transferring data at high speed between the CCU and the communication scanners and channel adapter (CH A).
