A plasma panel operating in video mode is cycled at its maximum rate to produce a maximum light output. One way to reduce this light output is to have the selected pels (picture elements) "on" during alternate scan frames to provide an apparently dimmer panel. Since the state of the pels can be selectively controlled during each scan, this provides a three-level gray scale capability where individual pels are on for neither scan, for one scan, or for both scans. This technique can be extended to more than three levels provided the scan rate is high enough to prevent flicker. However, the three-level gray scale will permit such identification techniques as highlighting and blinking.
