Fig. 1 shows a conceptual design for a HeNe laser detection scheme for determining whether or not the (16x) magnetic heads 8 of a magnetic recording disk file, shown in Fig. 2, will hit an edge of a disk 12 during the insertion phase of the assembly operation. It employs a basic HeNe laser 1 which emits a beam 2 into a beam splitter 3 that separates the beam 2 into (16x) laser beams that travel along precisely predetermined paths to a reflector detector 5. The actuator assembly 6 is then moved back and forth as shown (7), causing the magnetic heads 8 to pass into the vicinity of the laser beams 4 (Fig. 2).
