In reel-to-reel tape drives which use a cartridge and a self-threading mechanism, the tape may not successfully load the first time the cartridge is loaded into the drive. In most drives, this requires the operator to unload and reload the cartridge. In most cases, a second loading of the cartridge is successful. The present proposal is to automatically load the cartridge a second time without requiring operator intervention. The flow chart illustrates a procedure for accomplishing this. The cartridge is inserted into the drive, and a "Begin Load" operation is initiated. A test for "Load Fail" is made. If a load failure is not detected, a "Retry Flag" is reset and a "Load Complete" signal given. If a load failure is detected, the "Retry Flag" is examined.
