Abstract

Moving coil actuators have been used in line printers because of their fast response time, rapid settle out time and high efficiency. Most moving coil actuators are used in high speed engraved line printers. As the speed requirement of the wire matrix terminal printer increases and the strength of the permanent magnets improves, the moving coil actuators are now more pertinent in the application of wire matrix printers. This article describes the configuration of a compact and efficient design of a wire matrix printhead with moving coil actuators. The moving coil actuators used in line printers are all arranged in a linear array form and, therefore, a return path for the magnetic flux is required. This long return path increases the leakage and reduces the efficiency.
