A card holder 10 (Fig. 1) has an ink pad 11 supplied with ink from an ink reservoir 12. A print wheel has elements 13 for positioning against a platen 14 through an opening 15 in the card holder 10 when a print hammer 16, which is disposed in a housing 17 mounted on the carriage, is activated. The housing 17 has a second hammer 18 disposed opposite the ink pad 11. The second hammer 18 applies a smaller force to the element 13 than the print hammer 16. The second hammer 18 is disposed a distance of four of the print wheel elements 13 from the print hammer 16. The print wheel element 13, which has the character to be printed, is initially positioned in front of the ink pad 11, and the second hammer 18 is energized to press the element 13 against the ink pad 11 to coat the face of the character on the element 13 with ink.
