Abstract

This invention relates to a method for optimizing nested queries in a distributed database. The method steps include (a) recursively optimizing individual nested queries independent of the location to which the query results are to be delivered, and (b) selecting the result site during the optimization of the query which uses the nested query. The method contemplates determining which sites should perform the tasks involved in processing query blocks in a query statement. The query block is a fundamental syntactic structure in the relational database accessing language SQL. The object is to minimize the resource involved in evaluation of the entire query statement.
