Magnetic recording heads for tape drives are quite fragile and can be readily damaged during handling and installation in a tape drive. A protective cover for a magnetic recording head has been designed and is shown in the figure. The cover has a curved front surface 1 which covers the head module without contacting it. The overhang portion 2 prevents accidental insertion of a tool onto the back or top of the module when it is being installed. Vertical side walls 3a and 3b are tapered so that the cover can be started onto the head module with a minimum of resistance which increases as the cover is placed over the module. The thicker upper half of the side walls 3a and 3b ensures that the cover is retained on the module. Vertical lip 3c also helps to retain the cover on the module.
