Abstract

This article describes the concept of integrating via hole and card edge connector systems. At present, printed circuit cards are orthogonally connected to mother boards using a spring contact connector on the printed circuit card edge. These edge tabs and spring contacts may be eliminated if via holes are drilled and plated in the card for accepting the alternate pin contact. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the pin contact system. The pin contact 2 is tapered and beveled for assuring adequate mechanical connection and contact resistance. The surface 3 of pin contact 2 is gold plated. Figs. 2 and 3 are top and side views, respectively, of the contact system shown in Fig. 1. The pin contact 2 makes electrical connection 4 through the plated via hold 6, thereby making more area on the card 8 available for circuit design.
