Thermal Expansion Travelling Support

This travelling support is intended to permit measurement or manufacturing apparatus to be displaced in steps on the order of nanometers. The travelling support (Fig. a) comprises a solid table 1 resting on releasably clampable feet 2. The clamping mechanism consists of a wire 3 inside a bore 4 of each foot 2 extending between an adjustable top 5 and a bottom counter-plate 6, and is normally under tension so as to pull foot 2 against bench 7. By passing a current through it, wire 3 elongates, thus releasing foot 2 and permitting it to be shifted as far as bore 4, inside foot 2, and/or bench 7 permit. Two concepts are envisioned for making the support travel (besides the well-known piezoelectrical approach): (1) Table 1 rests on bimetal legs 8 which, when heated, bend, moving the support.
