The linear motor is modified to be used as a rotary driver with infinite positions. The resulting arrangement where the sweep gear is replaced with a multilobe cam eliminates the problems of gear backlash. The modification consists of replacing the sweep gear with a multilobe cam 10 and angularly displacing the four pistons 12 of the linear hydraulic motor 14 to match the pitch arc of the cam 10. The shaft 16 can be positioned to an infinite number of positions without the backlash problems of gears, as illustrated in the figure. This feature would be especially useful in conjection with a manipulator or robot equipped with wheels which could be driven to an adjacent work station using feedback sensing under the control of a computer.
