Damping Preform Process Using Laser Cutting Technology

A process for forming a polymer material to a non-regular shape by laser cutting is described. The process is illustrated with respect to the inclusion of a visco-elastic polymer damping material on an irregularly shaped flat plate. The flat plate is formed (Step [A]) by any suitable technique, such as etching, to produce one or more plates 1. The visco-elastic polymer material 2 is then attached (Step [B]) to the plates 1, and the protective paper backing 3 is removed (Step [C]) from the polymer material 2. A suitable laser is then activated (Step [D]) and directed to plate 1 so that plate 1 serves as a mask for cutting the polymer material in a pattern corresponding to the etched openings 4 in plate 1. The protective area 5 of plate 1 is then removed (Step E), and the paper backing 3 is then replaced (Step [F]).
