Double-Squid Switching Device

This article relates generally to Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) and more particularly to a switchable circuit which incorporates such devices having a threshold characteristic which exhibits a step function-like steepening of the threshold curve. Fig. 1 shows a schematic diagram of a switchable circuit 1 which consists of a pair of inductively coupled Josephson interferometers identified in Fig. 1 as screening SQUID 2 and output SQUID 3 both of which are inductively coupled to an external input coil 4. Screening SQUID 2 may be a single or multijunction device and may or may not be biased. Similarly, output SQUID 3 may be a multijunction device and has current from a bias source flowing in it. Fig. 1 shows bias sources 5 and 6 coupled to SQUIDS 2 and 3, respectively.
