Determination of Correct Ink Jet Head Crystal Drive Through Break-Off Shape

In U.S. Patent 4,417,256, it has been recognized that the optimum operating point for a multinozzle ink jet printer occurs where the breakoff range for droplets from the capillary streams is minimized. The patent describes a method and apparatus for identifying the operating point and maintaining the drive voltage of the crystal to operate within the range. Several characteristics of the droplet streams can be monitored and used for controlling the voltage which drives the crystal or drop generator. This article describes one of such characteristics. This method is called the "breakoff shape analysis method".
