Method For Pre-Stressing Row Tp Achieve Positive Crown Air Bearing
A method is described for pre-stressing a row of thin film magnetic
transducers to achieve a positive crown air bearing slider.
The method comprises the step of sputtering a coating of stainless steel after
appropriate cleaning. The sputtering conditions are adjusted to produce
maximum acceptable compression of the stainless steel. The back of the row is
then scribed on slider parting lines to relieve pre-stressing effects on this surface
in the direction of row length.
The row is then bonded and lapped in conventional fashion to produce the
positive crown. The stainless steel is then photo-masked in an appropriate
pattern for arm attachment. The excess stainless steel is then removed by
sputter etching, and the slider is attached to the arm by suitable techniques such
