In a spelling error correction program, the present technique reduces the word list volume that requires detailed match processing by isolating only those candidates with defined phonological characteristics that match the misspelled word. This eliminates unwanted extraneous words while retaining the intended target word in an environment in which either the attempted spelling or word in the file of words being searched is misspelled. The resultant list is a subset of the original list which contains the presence of highly reliable key phonemes that are represented orthographically. These phonemes are generally difficult to overlook during spelling attempts. The resultant list can then undergo detailed examination to isolate a final set.
