A microcomputer controlled electronic dictionary includes a microcomputer 10 having a keyboard input device 12 and a video output device 14. Dictionary information is stored on a video disc including text information, pictorial information both still and motion pictures, pronunciation and other audio information. The video disc 16, upon a read command from the microcomputer 10, provides data to formatter 18 which configures the data and the proper format for mixing in mixer 20 to provide a composite video signal to display 14.
