This overheating protection circuit avoids the use of expensive relay
operated circuit protection in a device wherein a cooling system or blower failure
could result in an AC circuit being switched off.
The AC power circuit to be turned off in case of ambient temperature rise is
provided with a calibrated fuse (e.g., a 5-amp fuse). This fuse is also connected
to the anode of a high power thyristor, the cathode of which is connected to a
return lead. The thyristor gate is connected to a DC circuit including a thermal
switch and a resistor R1. Under normal ambient temperature the thermal switch
is closed and the thyristor is off. A rise in ambient temperature will open the
thermal switch, and the DC voltage will then trigger the thyristor. An important
current, e.g., about 40 times the rated value of the fuse, is drawn through the
thyristor which would thus blow the fuse within 10 second. The current in the
thyristor is limited by the internal resistance of the fuse to a value lower than the
rated value of the thyristor.
For low consumption machines, the resistance of the fuse is higher because
of the fuse rating. Therefore, since the current limit for a low consumption
machine is lower, a smaller thyristor can be used.
