Channel Adapter Switch with Alternative Operating Modes to Bypass Hardware Failures

A device for interconnecting the channels of several processor systems includes a channel adapter for each input port, two independent switch systems (A and B) for interconnecting two pairs of the adapters, and a microprocessor for handling the switch interconnections. When an error occurs, the microprocessor retries the operation. A count is kept of the errors for each combination of a pair of channel adapters and each of the two switch systems. As the count reaches threshold levels, the operating mode is changed in order to reduce the likelihood of further errors. When a first threshold is reached, an interconnection between two adapters is no longer made through the switch of the high error count but is made only through the alternate switch.
