This article reveals a relatively simple circuit for detecting potentially damaging current transients even where the total system current (normal plus abnormal transients) is considerably less than the maximum expected system current. Briefly, the system current is tracked with a digital counter driven by a fixed frequency clock. If a transient occurs, the counter output will lag the instantaneous system current. When the lag exceeds a threshold level, an incremental over-current condition is indicated.
