CCD Floating Diffusion Output Tap
An efficient output port layout desing for a CCD (charge-coupled device)
imaging device is described. This design fits into the existing stage-pitch of th
CCD serial register in an in-line way.
In a typical CCD imaging device containing 8 destructive output taps in a
1024-stage serial register which is divided into 8 sections of 128 stages each, the
8 output ports must fit into the existing stage-pitch. The type of output structure
required is resettable floating-diffusion. The reset section generally cannot fit into
the pitch in the normal in-line way.
Designs of this type of output structure are known. Some prior designs show
a right-angle bend in the CCD charge transfer path at each output point. This is
not optimum because of complexity and poor speed performance of the long
gates at the bend (speed Alpha 1/ (length/2/).
A solution to this problem is shown in the drawing, which is a plan view of the
channels, channel-stops, and only the directly pertinent gates, at an output tap
point. Here, the floating diffusion serves also as a narrow conductor carrying the
floating node voltage out to a reset section and output amplifier connection which
are out of line with the serial register. Thus, only the narrow floating diffusion
takes up space in the serial register proper, and the reset section can be
removed far enough to permit unrestricted connections to the serial register gate
